Before your next IT upgrade: a business planning checklist

Use these questions with business owners, your IT team and the providers who need to participate. Note what you know and what needs review before defining the scope.

  1. 1. Objective

What needs to improve, and which business process would benefit? Define how you will recognize that the work meets the objective.

  2. 2. People

Who uses the affected systems? Who approves decisions and coordinates the participants?

  3. 3. Systems and dependencies

Which applications, connections and services depend on the change? What information is missing for planning?

  4. 4. Access and responsibilities

Who administers access, and who can authorize changes? Keep credentials and sensitive details out of public documents.

  5. 5. Timing and resources

Which deadlines, budget constraints and change windows matter? What internal and external resources will you need?

  6. 6. Continuity

Which operations need to continue, and what procedure will be agreed if a change encounters a problem?

  7. 7. Validation

Which scenarios will be tested, who will review the results and how will open items be documented?

  8. 8. Handover

What documentation and guidance will the team receive? Who will own the agreed follow-up?
